Latinized form of the Ancient Greek name "Andreas". Andreas was derived from "aner" - "man"
(genitive "andros" - "of a man"), which would translate as "brave, manly, of men". In the New
Testament the apostle Andrew is the first disciple to join Jesus. He later preached in the Black Sea
region (in Dobrogea - in the South East of present Romania, and then up to the Dnieper river). There
are legends saying he was crucified on an X-shaped cross, after returning into Greece, in the city
of Patras, in Peloponnese. Saint Andrew is regarded as the patron of Greece, Romania, Russia,
Scotland. The flag of Scotland (and consequently the Union Flag which also features on the flags of
Australia, New Zealand and the arms and flag of Nova Scotia) feature St Andrew's saltire cross.
The feast of Andrew is observed on November 30 in both the Eastern and Western churches.
